How to choose the right chainsaw?

Whether you're a seasoned do-it-yourselfer or not, purchasing the right tools for the job is key. And when it comes to chainsaws, it's essential to remember that not all models are suitable for all types of projects.

Types of chainsaws

Three types of chainsaws are available.

A cordless chainsaw is easy to use and requires little maintenance. Because the motor produces less friction and heat, this type of saw delivers good power and lasts a long time.

An electric chainsaw is also easy to handle but requires an external socket and an extension cord for use. Offering constant power, this type of saw is suitable for yard work.

A gas-powered chainsaw is portable and very robust. It's ideal for cutting down large trees or wood. However, it requires regular maintenance and is suitable for more experienced do-it-yourselfers.

Which chainsaw for which job?

Experienced DIYers looking to do heavy work such as cutting hardwoods should opt for a battery-powered saw with a high ampere-hour ratio or a gas-powered saw, which offers more power and mobility.

For small garden jobs, for cutting softwood or for less experienced users, an electric chainsaw is an option but may require the use of an extension cord, which limits the reach of the saw. Battery-powered chainsaws with shorter chains may also be an excellent choice. Moreover, these products are generally lighter and quieter.

For work at height, a long-handled battery-powered saw is ideal. It's perfect for cutting high tree branches or hard-to-reach places.
