Two types of tool motors are currently available on the market: brushed motors – aka standard motors – and brushless motors.
How does a battery-powered tool's motor work?
A brushed tool motor is powered by contact between two carbon blocks (brushes) and a rotor (the inner part of the motor). This contact transmits electric current through the rotor coils to produce a magnetic field.
Conversely, a brushless motor tool is powered by multiple magnets of opposite poles attached to a rotor. A brushless motor also has an external rotor position sensor and an electronic system that controls the rotation of the magnets to continuously stabilize the tool's speed.
The advantages of brushless power tools
Unlike brushed motors, brushless motors do not lose part of their energy through heat dissipation. Moreover, while the carbon blocks and rotor of a brushed motor cause friction, a brushless motor is frictionless given that none of its parts comes into contact with another.
Owning a brushless motor tool therefore has many advantages as it makes for a more powerful and energy-efficient tool and offers precise variable speed options. Also, because its housing is often more enclosed, a brushless motor tool generally better protects the tool's internal components.
For these reasons, brushless tools are generally considered to be higher end since they are made with better quality components and have a longer lifespan.
Brushless motors deliver better autonomy
Since tools with brushless motors consume less energy, they yield better autonomy. Combined with the stability of lithium-ion batteries, which lose no charge when idle, this tool category has produced a range of new products such as battery-powered saw benches, SDS MAX hammers and battery-powered mitre saws.
The difference between a brushed and a brushless motor
Tools with a brushed motor also have advantages. First, they are less expensive and lighter than tools with brushless motors. While they are sometimes a little less robust and powerful, brushed motor tools are less expensive to repair.
As brushless motor tools are higher end, they are generally used by professionals. However, increasingly, occasional DIY enthusiasts are using them as well. Brushless motor tools are very useful for demanding jobs and are sure to greater increase productivity.
