Density of material
Glass, ceramic and porcelain have different densities, it is recommended to use a higher performance product for denser tiles.
Glass
Arrowhead products such as the Bosch GT300 series work very well in glass.
Porcelain
For the same size hole in porcelain, we would prioritize a diamond cutter like the CB006.
Ceramic
In a ceramic, it is possible to make a choice that is a little between the two previous options like the VG4003. It is easy to use and gives a good result for many types of materials.
Easy and fast drilling
In a tight space, cutters that require an angled start or that fit on a larger, specialized tool can be a problem.
Whether the hole is visible or hidden can also guide the selection. For a hidden opening, one can sometimes afford to be a little more "rough" by using products that are faster, such as diamond discs mounted on a grinder.
The PEADIA04TT for example, allows to create an opening quickly provided that it is handled by a more agile worker.
Many professionals also use this type of blade to create large diameter round openings. However, the new Titan Diamond product line allows you to continue using your grinder but with adapted cutters to minimize risks and accentuate the sharpness of the result.
5 important points when drilling this type of product:
- Do not use percussion on drills;
- Let the accessory work, do not exaggerate the speed of rotation but exert a good pressure;
- Most products require an angled start, do not try to start a hole with a flat die;
- Use a drilling jig when possible;
- Be sure not to overheat the product and use water when drilling whenever possible.
A little trick is to cut out a sponge and insert it in the center of your hole saw and use it to give you a little water when you put your pressure. Using a piercing wax can also replace, in a way, the water to temper your bit. Rubi's red series, such as the RUB05923, comes pre-waxed for dry use.
Durability of hole saw
The Pearl HB114L2 and TDT CB032 are built with a diamond grain in a paste which gives them a great resistance. So as long as there is paste, unless the product overheats, the die can be used.
In some products where the diamond grain is affixed to a steel surface, the durability will be less. This is also the case for solid bits which have a very variable life depending on the density of the tile to be worked and the way they are used.
Additional drilling accessories
Is your hole too small or imperfect? No problem! It is possible to use an enlargement cone, a chisel or a double-sided blade to correct it.
